Whilst the Newton Gateway to Mathematics aims to respond in a speedy and focused way to new ideas and approaches, it also recognises the need for a targeted and continuous approach to the delivery of longer term knowledge exchange activities in the mathematical sciences.

Mathematic knowledge exchange presents a number of challenges, not least because it is hugely cross-cutting and multi-disciplinary. On the one hand, increased focus on research outcomes and pathways to impact, make the need for others to know what is already known by mathematicians more critical than ever. Yet on the other, not everyone who needs it, knows where to turn for support or advice.

There is also a need to support mathematical researchers who seek to recognise and articulate the impact of their research and to help other mathematicians to address mathematical research problems from a wide spread of disciplines both inside and beyond the universities.

In recognition of this, the Newton Gateway delivers five thematic knowledge exchange programmes. These are linked to a number of areas which are recognised as being of strategic and economic importance to the UK. These programmes aim to stimulate and support mathematical sciences knowledge exchange via ongoing dialogue with key stakeholders and activities which include research and training workshops, consultations and ad-hoc projects.

Programme Areas

Mathematics for Biology and Healthcare Systems

Mathematics is key to helping address the challenges within the Biology and Healthcare Systems sectors. The Newton Gateway to Mathematics has helped develop a number of Programmes of Work related to healthcare, particularly on medical imaging and aspects related to drug development and use in medical industries. The Gateway works as a delivery partner with the EPSRC Centre for Mathematical Imaging in Healthcare (CMIH) to help enhance partner and end-user engagement and interaction.

Mathematics for Financial Services

The application of advanced mathematics and statistics in the financial services sector is widespread. The Newton Gateway to Mathematics has developed a number of activities in this area, particularly for mathematical modelling and computational methods, working closely with industry stakeholders. The Gateway works as a delivery partner with the Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information (CCIMI)  on end-user engagement and interaction.

Mathematics for the Environment and Energy

Mathematics is fundamental in solving many ongoing problems across the environment and energy sectors. As well as helping to address research and technology challenges, the Newton Gateway to Mathematics is keen to develop more training activities. For instance, there are recognised mathematical skills gaps in the environmental sciences.
