Carl Whitfield (University of Manchester)

I am Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Manchester and have been part of the Juniper consortium since late 2021.

I obtained my PhD from the University of Sheffield in Theoretical Biophysics in 2016. Since then, I have held several short post-doctoral positions in areas related to computational modelling, fluid mechanics and biology. In particular, I was awarded an MRC Skills Development Fellowship at the University of Manchester in 2017 to research computational modelling of the lung airways in Cystic Fibrosis.

In June 2020, in a sideways move, I joined an MRC-funded project to model the role of delivery drivers in the pandemic, supervised by Profs Ian Hall and Martie van Tongeren at the University of Manchester. Since then, I have mainly been focussed on modelling and understanding the impact of SARS-CoV-2 testing interventions in workplaces and other settings, include social care.
