Convincing scam alert

We have been made aware of a convincing email scam that is focusing on our events at the Newton Gateway and at Isaac Newton Institute Programme and Workshop participants. Participants may receive an email from a firm called Expo Hotel Services (ehotelservices.org)  or Traveller Point (travellerpoint.org) to arrange accommodation for workshops and/or programmes. This might include a request to provide them with credit card information.

Please note, INI or the Newton Gateway to Mathematics will never ask for your card details. We take all payments via the University of Cambridge Online store https://onlinesales.admin.cam.ac.uk/.

If you have been contacted by this company please contact us as soon as possible.

Newton Gateway Events

The Newton Gateway to Mathematics delivers activity across a broad range of sectors and engages in partnership with the users of mathematics - academics from other disciplines, those from industry and the public sector.
Activities are bespoke and may originate from the need to address a specific technical issue or look for a better solution. Alternatively, they could be in response to the need to obtain ideas for next generation solutions from mathematicians involved in frontier research.

Activities take a number of forms:

  • Events - workshops and consultations
  • Training programmes
  • Short to medium-term research programmes
  • Projects

The Newton Gateway delivers Open for Business knowledge exchange events on behalf of the Isaac Newton Institute. These are specifically designed to bring together industrial, commercial and government organisations with mathematical scientists and can be run as part of an ongoing research programme, or as an independent event.

3rd European Optimisation in Space Engineering (OSE)

Thursday 17th September 2015 to Friday 18th September 2015

The third workshop on Optimisation in Space Engineering (OSE) was
jointly organised by the Turing Gateway to Mathematics (TGM), the
University of Southampton, University of Birmingham, the European Space
Agency (ESA), Airbus Defence and Space, University of Strathclyde and
University of Bremen.

Design of Experiments in Drug Development - Open for Business Event

Thursday 9th July 2015

One of the most important areas in drug development is the design of
experiments. The better these are, the more efficient the trials. Such
efficiencies lead to fewer patients, shorter timeframes and reduced
costs. There is therefore a need for more seamless and complex adaptive
designs in drug development and mathematical and statistical
methodologies and models are key to such improvements.

The Role of Inverse Problems and Optimisation in Uncertainty Quantification

Wednesday 17th June 2015 to Thursday 18th June 2015

In current decision making, it is usual to update a probabilistic model of the system using a mixture of data assimilation and inverse problems solutions and to then frame a stochastic optimisation problem in order to make decisions as the need arises. Heuristic methods are used for both the data assimilation and for the stochastic optimisation problem. However, stochastic control and sequential decision theories indicate that this process is sub-optimal, but it is far from obvious how to do better. So, can the mathematical sciences provide anything to improve matters?

Challenges in Dynamic Imaging Data

Tuesday 9th June 2015 to Friday 12th June 2015

The processing and analysis of time-varying data encompasses many challenges, such as how to manage time varying aspects in order to understand and analyse dynamic image contents, detect objects, track and analyse their behaviours so that what is happening in a sequence of images can be better understood. For instance, the parsing of a video sequence to provide a narrative of what is occurring remains a challenge, in terms of who or what is involved and their interactions. On the other hand, rapid acquisition and processing of dynamic processes in medical imaging is challenging due to physical and technological limitations. CCTV for instance, is increasingly commonplace and has proved to be an invaluable tool in the investigation of crime ranging from petty theft to the global threat of terrorism. Dynamic imaging in biomedicine is used to investigate the functionality of organs down to the dynamics of cells and molecules. 3D conversion in media industry requires the processing of high definition videos.

Reasoning via Formal Models in Economics - Normative vs. Positive Models

Wednesday 13th May 2015

Normative and positive models are usually taken to reflect the "should"
and "could" aspects of choice, respectively. But sometimes the distinction
isn't so clear.
