Monday 21st August 2023

Aberystwyth University, United Kingdom

This Open for Business event is part of an INI programme on Geometry and Packing in Material Structure and Biology. It aims to provide a forum for industrialists to explain the challenges in their field and to engage with mathematicians to explore solutions.

Background

The problem of finding the densest packing of solid spheres is now well-established. It has remarkable analogues in the arrangements of molecules, granular packings and jamming, and the best way to transmit encoded messages over a noisy channel. Over the last two decades the field of packing problems has broadened considerably to encompass the packing of anisotropic particles (e.g. ellipsoids and polyhedra) and the packing of soft objects, for example in suspensions, foams and emulsions, driven by advances in the theory and practical implementation of optimisation techniques.

Aims & Objectives

This event will bring together mathematicians to explore the possibilities and applications in industry of the most recent research in the field of geometric packing and optimisation. Themes are likely to include logistics, food formulation, pharmaceuticals, and ore-separation.

This workshop will feature a series of talks and panel discussions.

A Provisional Programme is being developed.

We anticipate the event will run from 10.00 – 3.30pm.  There will be a networking reception, followed by an evening Science Café in Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

Registration and Venue

This event is free to attend, and registration is now open. To register, please follow the link in the lefthand panel.

The workshop will take place at Aberystwyth University. Please visit the Aberystwyth University website for further information about the venue.

To maximise networking opportunities and interaction with speakers and other participants, we strongly encourage in-person attendance to this workshop. However, this event will also be hosted as hybrid via Zoom – please indicate whether you plan to join in-person or virtually when registering.
