Established in May 2016 through philanthropic support from Cantab Capital Partners LLP, the Institute accommodates research activity on fundamental mathematical problems and methodology for understanding, analysing, processing and simulating data. Data science research performed in the Institute is at the highest international level, aiming to extract the relevant information from large and high-dimensional data with a predictable certainty.

The advance of data science and the solution of big data questions heavily relies on fundamental mathematical techniques and in particular, their intra-disciplinary engagement. This is at the heart of the Institute, involving mathematical expertise ranging from statistics, applied and computational analysis, to topology and discrete geometry – all with the common goal of advancing data science questions. More information about CCIMI can be seen online, including some interviews with key faculty staff.

The Gateway works with the Institute as a delivery partner for a user engagement programme of work, undertaking engagement activities. Working in partnership with the Institute, this involves helping to develop, organise and deliver events, ensuring maximum possible exposure both within and outside academia across the UK.

As part of this activity, industry and academic engagement events have been delivered since 2016. More information about these events can be seen on the relevant webpages:

  • Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information Launch Event, Monday 9th May 2016. This event celebrated the launch of CCIMI and provided an opportunity to learn more about the work of the Institute, such as the specific questions that feed into fundamental methodology development. Presentations introduced the areas of mathematical expertise represented in the Institute and outlined how fundamental techniques can be drawn on to meet the challenge of deciphering meaning in the ever growing volumes of data.
  • CCIMI New Directions in the Mathematics of Information, Thursday 10th November 2016. This event provided an update to the original launch in May, providing more detailed information on research projects and collaborations, as well as highlighting potential new ones. It featured presentations of some of the current project collaborations.
  • High Dimensional Mathematics - A Research Conference of the Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information, Thursday 25th May 2017. This event was the first annual academic conference for CCIMI. An elevator pitch session was delivered by the CCIMI students and then academic talks were given by speakers from CCIMI, the University of Cambridge and other invited Institutions.
  • Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information – Connecting with Industry, Wednesday 22nd November 2017. This industrial engagement day provided an update on research and collaborations taking place at CCIMI. The talks highlighted research taking place at CCIMI, with associated industrial engagements and looked to explore the big questions in data science where mathematics is most suited to help provide answers.
  • The Mathematics of Machine Learning - A Research Conference of the Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information, Thursday 24th May 2018. This second annual academic conference focused on the academic interactions taking place related to the mathematics of machine learning.
  • Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information – Connecting with Industry, Wednesday 14th November 2018. This 3rd Industry engagement day highlighted research taking place at CCIMI and included a session hosted by CCIMI students which they developed and delivered as a group.
  • Geometric and Topological Approaches to Data Analysis, Thursday 13th June 2019. This research conference brought together those academics working to advance data science and provided an update on the research and collaborations taking place at CCIMI.
  • Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information - Connecting with Industry, Wednesday 27th November 2019. The main focus of this one day industrial engagement event was to provide an update on research and collaborations taking place at the CCIMI, as well as presenting interesting research being developed elsewhere.
  • Mathematical Foundations of Optimisation in Data Science, Tuesday 24th November 2020. The fourth annual academic conference focused on the academic interactions taking place related to mathematical foundations of optimisation in data science and included a session of short elevator pitches by next generation researchers.
  • Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information – Connecting with Industry, Wednesday 25th November 2020. This event focused on industrial collaborations with CCIMI, as well as providing an update on research being carried out.
  • The Flip Side of the Pandemic: Recent Advances in the Mathematics of Information took place via Zoom on Thursday 20th May 2021.It provided an update on the research and collaborations taking place at CCIMI specifically related to understanding and modelling the Coronavirus pandemic and associated challenges.
  • Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information – Connecting with Industry, Wednesday 24th November 2021. This conference brought together those academics working to advance data science and aimed to showcase the research that is being carried out at the Institute and enable delegates to hear more detail about some of the current project collaborations and industry challenges that CCIMI is exploring.
  • Uncertainty Quantification : Recent Advances in the Mathematics of Information, 26th May 2022. This conference will bring together those academics working to advance data science and will provide an update on the research and collaborations taking place at CCIMI specifically related uncertainty quantification. It will be an in person event held at the The Møller Institute, Churchill College, Cambridge and not at the Isaac Newton Institute or the Centre for Mathematical Sciences.
  • Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information – Connecting with Industry, Wednesday 23rd November 2022, Isaac Newton Institute. The main focus of this one day industrial engagement event was to provide an update on research and collaborations taking place at the CCIMI, as well as presenting interesting research being developed elsewhere. This event followed the previous industry and academic engagement events delivered since 2016 and more information is available on the Gateway initiatives webpage.

Upcoming event:

  • Phase Transitions and Correlated Random Processes Wednesday 10th May 2023 Isaac Newton Institute. Launched in 2016, CCIMI accommodates research activity on fundamental mathematical problems and methodology for understanding, analysing, processing and simulating data. Data science research performed in the Institute is of the highest international level, aiming to extract the relevant information from large and high-dimensional data with a predictable certainty. This in-person event follows previous successful academic and industrial engagement events, which focused on different aspects related to the mathematics of information.
