The Mathematics and Statistics department at Lancaster has a long-standing tradition of conducting methodological research motivated by, and feeding back into, applied challenges arising from work with industrial partners. Examples of impact from their work include setting new international safety standards for bulk carriers, designing flood defences across the whole of the UK, and halving the number of cases of a certain type of food poisoning in New Zealand. The STOR-i Centre for Doctoral Training (STOR-i), the Medical and Pharmaceutical Statistics Research Unit (MPS) and the newly-formed Data Science Institute are some of the principal vehicles used to develop new and ongoing relationships.
